I spent the day with Mom. I got my haircut. The sides and back aren't as short as I would have liked, but it's a good style that I can do many things with. Or nothing at all.
I helped Mom pump loads of money into the local economy. We went to Trader Joe's and made it so I won't have to buy groceries for like two weeks after I get back. We went to a major department store because Quaker Gardens (the retirement home where Mom works) gives Mom huge gift cards every few months in a move that seems to me like hush money. But that's a whole different story. With the cards, Quaker Gardens gave me a brand new fan, Lost in Translation on DVD and an awesome DVD set that includes the 1931 Lugosi Dracula (with the Kronos Quartet providing music as opposed to the copy I already had which was the original musicless version), the spanish version of the same year (which I've wanted to see for years. I've heard it's a better film with a worse actor as Dracula,) Dracula's Daughter, Son of Dracula, and House of Dracula. They also had simular sets of Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, but I had to go with the one with the spanish Dracula.
We went to the mall and saw Mr. Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz was my high school drama teacher my freshman year who kind of got me going down the creative path I went down. He got me transferred to Huntington High for the performing arts school. I was a favorite of his and he was a favorite of mine. We lost touch after high school but now, after a series of odd events, he's the general manager of the mall. It was good to see him and it seemed like both he and I wished we could have hung out longer and caught up.
Mom got lots of presents for the nieces. A princess dress for Abi's birthday, some toys, and so forth.
I also got Amelie and Run Lola Run on DVD. Then to the art supply warehouse. I bought myself a Drinky Crow action figure. The action is that he drinks from a jug and his eyes can be changed into X's.
Then we went out for Thai food.
So, Mom probably spent on me today about what I make in a month. She was happy though and we had a lot of fun too. We came home and watched some movies.

Tomorrow, as I promised Pat, I'm going to church at the old Quaker church where we grew up and where there's so much bad blood between my Mom and the church. I'm sure I'll get into that tomorrow.
Instagon tomorrow night.
The book deal is almost done. It'll close on Monday.
That night comes the tattoo. Phish designed it for me and it's almost perfect. All I want is to get the leg a little longer and it'll be perfect.
Dr. O is going back early on his own to see the Magnetic Fields (envy has turned me a lovely emerald.) So I'm probably driving back on Thursday, alone, instead of Tuesday with Dr. O.
Tuesday Mom has off.
Wednesday I'm picking up two more boxes of books from my grandmother (this really is a working vacation.) So that's how the next few days are looking as of right now.

I hadn't spent $30 on entertainment items in months. I went to the Book Baron, which was having a sale today, and I bought myself a cryptozoology, a volume of Paul Verlaine's poetry and a comic book adaptation of Grimm's fairy tales in all of their old gory glory. When I was at George Fox, I took French because I wanted to read Victor Hugo in the original language. I told my professor this, who was a little old lady in her late 80's, and she and I would meet once a week and talk about Dostoyevsky, Walt Whitman, translations of literature and so forth. She got me into Paul Verlaine. I almost failed French, but I had a great time.
After the Book Baron I went up to Ipso Facto. They had nothing I was interested in. I don't know if I've changed or if they have. I suspect a little of both.
On the way back I stopped by Best Magic, which was my favorite magic shop when I lived down here. I bought a potato gun and a pen that looks like a syringe.

My folks, whose house I'm staying at while I'm here in case you didn't know, both stayed home today. Mom's tests were today and she was not doing well with not having eaten for a day.
I left around noon to go to the library. First I filled my tires. It turned out my alignment isn't off. I've just got leaky tires.
Got some books. I stopped at my old childhood punk record store and my old comic book store. Neither had anything I was interested in so I decided that tomorrow I'm going to go to Ipso Facto. It's one place I always try and stop by when I'm in OC even though it's a long drive through some of the ugliest traffic areas (Disney) in OC to get there. I'm going to hope against hope that they have a Nicki Jaine t-shirt. As far as I know she doesn't have one printed, but all day today I wore a faded to near grey Faith and the Muse t-shirt that I bought at Ipso Facto like four years ago that Faith and the Muse had no hand in the production of. It's one of those kinds of cool stores. Don't get them busted.
I saw Lycia at Ipso Facto back in the early '90's. They used to have shows in the small room in the back.
I took a long walk today. Then I went to the park and read until Mom called. Good news is they didn't find anything wrong with her. Bad news is that means more tests. Good news is they started with the most grueling test, so it's all uphill from here.
I went to see Charles, Phish, Yod and Jessica. We went out for Thai food. Really good thai food. I had the spinach dish with some rice with a great soy and ginger sauce. We had a good long talk. Then ice cream. Then back to their place to try and find tattoo ideas for me on the internet. I think Phish is going to tweak a few images for me to get something original. Nifty.

I cut Boingo's flea collar off tonight. All of his old fondness for me came flooding back in that moment. He looked up at me and teared up a bit and said "Master! You've returned!"
Then I invaded the nape of his neck with flea repelling chemicals. He's none the wiser.

Oh, and there's been a lot of lap time with Boingo too.

The drive was a lot easier with Dr. Oblivious along. He slept a good deal of the way, but it's still easier when there's somebody with you. Plus I had two significant breaks from driving. So even though it was 12 hours of driving, it wasn't so bad.
I've spent the main part of my time here pricing the library I'm buying. I finished this morning. It's a small library, four boxes, but some great religion books.
Monday I saw Charles for a short amount of time. Monday night I got a call from Pat. He'd found a copy of my poetry chap book when he was feeding my fish. He read it and found the link to this blog in the back. Then he says he went and read the whole thing. I was impressed. He wanted to apologize for pressuring me into things I might not want to get into.
I tried really hard to fight the temptation to go over my blog and see what he'd read. I failed. Looking back over the past year and a half, I found that the only thing I'm sorry he saw was the fact that I was feeding the stray cats when I first moved to Chico. I myself was sorry to see how messed up and stupid I seem to have been around last Christmas. I said a lot of things back then that made me cringe reading it now. I don't know what was up with me. I'm glad I got better.
Please don't go back and reread last December now.
Also on Monday I went for a very slow walk with my mother. There's something physically wrong with my mother. She's going in for tests on Thursday. We're all worried.
Yesterday I went to visit Mammy, my maternal grandmother. She seems to be doing very well. I took her to Rutabagorz for lunch.
Today I finished the big pricing job of this trip. Then I went to the library, got some books, walked around a park.
So tomorrow is Mom's test and I'm supposed to see Charles and Phish probably. Friday Dad goes hunting so I imagine the weekend will be a lot of shopping with my mom unless she's not up to it. I may take my car into the shop on Monday to make sure it's good to make the trip back, but maybe not. There's nothing to indicate it's not (except that the alignment might be off a bit.) Monday or Tuesday I'm going with Dad to get my tattoo. Tuesday Mom took the day off of work to spend with me. As soon as that's done I might go right back up that night. Drive all night. That'll be largely up to Dr. O who is also riding back with me.
Anyway, I'll be back in Chico sometime between early Wednesday and early Thursday.
